NAGAPATTINAM: A team of officials from the Asian Development Bank led by Alex K. Jorgensen, Principal Urban Specialist, ADB India Resident Mission, along with C.V. Sankar, Officer on Special Duty, Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation, Tamil Nadu Government, reviewed on Thursday the progress of tsunami rehabilitation works being carried out with ADB assistance in various parts of Nagapattinam district.

Mr. Sankar explained the progress of rehabilitation works to the ADB officials at a review meeting and attended by Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar and other officials. Besides, Mr. Jorgensen, the ADB team was represented by Anil Dass, Livelihood Specialist, and Deepak Singh, Engineering Specialist.

The ADB is extending financial assistance to the tune of Rs.151.97 crore for rehabilitation works in Nagapattinam district Rs.38.46 crore for laying of roads, Rs.38.72 crore for livelihood activities, Rs.5.48 crore for providing water supply in coastal areas, Rs.18.77 crore for providing basic amenities in Tharangampadi, Velankanni, Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam and Rs.50.52 crore for development works in Nagapattinam port.

The ADB team, along with Mr. Sankar and Mr. Jawahar, inspected the first phase of development works taken up at Nagapattinam port at a cost of Rs.9.62 crore and inspected the livelihood project taken up at a cost of Rs.19.90 crore at Kallar.

Later talking to mediapersons, Mr. Jorgensen said that tsunami rehabilitation works were indeed carried out as per ADB norms and guidelines and added that the works would be completed the before monsoon. Mr. Sankar instructed officials to expedite the works, particularly construction of permanent houses by non-governmental organisations.
