Separate channels inside ducts for power lines and satellite Television cables
COIMBATORE: A few months ago, it seemed to be just a case of loud thinking. But it is now more or less certain that all electricity and television cables will go underground in the city. The Coimbatore Corporation wants to have underground ducts along all roads in the city so that power lines do not hang dangerously or face the threat of being snapped by a falling tree branch.
Coimbatore is among the municipal corporations in the State (after Chennai) that will have these ducts. Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy confirmed this during his recent visit here.
Wires hang perilously close to being pulled away by lorries with huge consignments. Some of them run so low above the roads that even an ordinary bus passing that way poses the risk of the line snapping.
One such area is Sukrawarpet, a commercial hub in the old municipality.
One can find a maze of wires almost looking like a hammock at certain points. Just as the road, there is congestion above it also - in the form of main power lines and service connections to buildings.
Television cables now run above the median on Avanashi Road and even wind along the parapet of the Avanashi Flyover. They run a few feet below the power lines and complete the picture of chaos.
The present plan is to have separate channels even inside the ducts for the power lines and satellite television cables. Enough space may be created for people to get into the ducts and carry out repairs.
But the size of the ducts may vary with the width of the road, according to sources in the Corporation.
If the one designed for the information technology corridor in Chennai is to come up here also, only a few roads such as Avanashi Road, Tiruchi Road and 100 Feet Road offer the scope for it.
With many roads in the old municipality too narrow for even bus traffic, creation of large ducts may not be possible. But the Corporation wants to rid the city of overhead lines, especially when it wants to have alternative modes of transport such as skybus and monorail that will run on elevated tracks above the roads.
