PUDUCHERRY: Forty minutes of meditation and half an hour of yogasanas on a daily basis will help these 35 people from Puducherry strengthen their bodies, especially their skeletal and muscular systems.

Afflicted with HIV/AIDS, these people will, from now on, perform the Surya Namaskar, a composite of 24 asanas, to maintain their skeletal and muscular system.

They will also perform asanas such as the Vriksh asana, the Bujanga asana and the Parvatha asana to strengthen the body.

These positive persons were identified by APACVHS and initiated into yoga practices by Coimbatore-based Isha Foundation of Jaggi Vasudevat a two-day workshop recently.

"We also have taught them the Shaambavi maha mantra to bring peace and tranquility to the mind. We had interactive sessions to help them accept the disease, because only the body has the disease but the suffering is what affects the mind," explained yoga instructor Swami Badrabahu from Isha Foundation.

He told The Hindu that the patients had been asked to avoid coffee and tea and take Sathumaavu kanji instead. "They take ART medicines to supplement the body with a lot of protein. They can also take sprouts, cereals, a lot of natural vegetables and soaked groundnuts, to be taken raw after being soaked for 4-5 hours."

Balachandran, also of the Isha Foundation, said most who attended the workshop were women, especially widows from poor families.

They have been instructed to meditate and perform yogasanas only once a day, he said.

There would be follow up sessions each month.

The foundation has been asked to conduct such classes in nine more districts in Tamil Nadu Namakkal, Karur, Trichy, Perambalur, Villupuram, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem said to have a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

A similar programme would be held in Villupuram on Saturday.
