Association seeks safe passage

MADURAI: Hundreds of trucks from Tamil Nadu and Kerala are stranded on both sides of the Karnataka border in the wake of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal giving its final award.

The crew are without proper food along the national highways with material worth lakhs stocked in the vehicles, the Lorry Owners' Association has said.

In a statement, its president, C. Sathiah, and secretary, K.N. Shaul Hameed, have urged the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to take steps for ensuring safe passage of lorries through Karnataka to reach Tamil Nadu and north India.

Vehicles with raw material meant for industries and essential commodities are stuck on the highways. This, he has pointed out, will paralyse trade, industry and service sectors.

The association has condemned anti-social elements in Karnataka for burning trucks.
