Distribution of medals to policemen marks the occasion
MADURAI: Distribution of constabulary medals to policemen, welfare assistance under various schemes, a colourful march past and an impressive cultural show by students marked the 58th Republic Day celebration at Armed Reserve Police grounds here on Friday.
The Collector, T. Udhayachandran, hoisted the tricolour in the presence of Superintendent of Police, T.S. Anbu, and took salute.
He was presented with a guard of honour by the police followed by a march past by contingents of police, Home Guards and National Cadet Corps.
He honoured about 200 freedom fighters in remembrance of their service during the freedom struggle and distributed the Chief Minister's Gallantry Medals to 79 police personnel.
Government employees were honoured for their meritorious service.
Welfare assistance amounting to Rs.36 lakh was disbursed to as many as 417 persons on the occasion, including Rs.28.75 lakh for seven self-help groups, comprising 110 persons, under Swarnajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana.
More than 1,000 students from various schools and colleges, including Sourashtra Girls Higher Secondary School, Capron Hall Girls Higher Secondary School, Nehru Vidhyasala, Mangayarkarasi Higher Secondary School, TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, enthralled the audience by presenting a spectacular cultural and gymnastic show.
The District Revenue Officer, C. Rajamani, the Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency, Kirlosh Kumar, Commissioner of Police, M. Chidambarasamy, Inspector General of Police (South Zone), Sanjeev Kumar, and Deputy Inspector General of Police, N. Shenbagaraman, were among the officials who took part. Twelve trainee Indian Administrative Service officers also participated.
Water project to be taken up soon
The State Government has sanctioned Rs.67 crore for the second Vaigai drinking water supply project to provide uninterrupted drinking water supply to the residents. The project would be taken up soon, said the Mayor, Thenmozhi Gopinathan, here on Friday.
She was addressing the gathering after unfurling the national flag at the 58th Republic Day celebrations held on the Corporation premises. She said that a sum of Rs.1,478 crore had been sanctioned for infrastructure development of Madurai Corporation area under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Reconstruction Project.
The following development works would be taken up under the project soon: drinking water augmentation work, drainage improvement, solid waste management, storm water drainage, road development and essential amenities for slum dwellers.
Earlier, the Mayor took salute at a march past presented by National Cadet Corps of Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School.
Students of Kakkaipadiniyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Kasturba Gandhi Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Palaganatham Government Girls Middle School, Velliveethiyar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School and Tallakulam Government High School gave scintillating dance performances.
The Mayor distributed 29 meritorious service certificates to Corporation employees and distributed prizes to student winners of various competitions. Kambar Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Subramaniapuram, bagged the shield for scoring cent per cent result in SSLC examinations. Best teacher awards were distributed to two teachers: I. Mani of Pandia Vellalar Corporation Middle School and Manonmani of Ramnath Middle School. The Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dhinakkaren, the Deputy Mayor, P.M. Mannan, and other officials were present.
