Welfare assistance of Rs.58 lakh distributed in Villupuram

VILLUPURAM: Gaiety and patriotic fervour marked the Republic Day celebrations held in Villupuram and Cuddalore districts.

Villupuram District Collector Brajendra Navnith hoisted the National Flag and took salute at the Police Parade Grounds on Friday. He honoured 70 freedom fighters and gave away the Chief Minister's Constabulary Medals for 2007 to 30 police personnel.

The Collector also distributed welfare assistance of Rs.58 lakh to 271 beneficiaries. In the cultural programmes that followed, a tri-cycle race was conducted for the physically challenged persons. Villupuram Government Higher Secondary School, MRICRC High School and Panaiyapuram Government Higher Secondary School presented various cultural programmes. Deputy Inspector General of Police Vanniyaperumal, Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah and District Revenue Officer Chandrasekaran took part.

In the Republic Day celebrations at Villupuram Municipality, Chairman Janakaraj, Commissioner Balasubramanian and councillors took part.

Cuddalore:

District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo unfurled the National Flag at Anna Stadium and inspected the guard of honour along with Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar. After honouring the freedom fighters with shawls, the Collector gave away Chief Minister's medals to 35 police personnel and distributed welfare aid worth over Rs.13 lakh. In the cultural programmes that followed, St Joseph's School and A.R.L.M. Matriculation Higher Secondary School performed mass drill. 35 students of demonstrated their skills in yoga.

Students of Oasis Special School for the Mentally Challenged presented a group dance on national integration.

In the celebrations held at Cuddalore municipality, G. Aiyappan, MLA, Chairman T. Thangarasu, Vice-Chairman Thamarai Selvan, and Commissioner R. Rajendran participated.
