MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam on Wednesday stood at 116.40 feet with no inflow and discharge of 775 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 42.06 feet with an inflow of 461 cusecs and a discharge of 1,891 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 2,749 mcft.
Around 290 supporters of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam were arrested when they tried to block traffic in protest against income tax raids at the house of the party leader Vijayakant, on Wednesday. On Tuesday, they had sought police permission for a demonstration on the North-West Masi Street junction but the police did not give them permission. When they tried to block traffic, the police arrested them.
Youth ends life
A youth jumped before a goods train and ended his life at the Vilangudi railway level crossing on Wednesday evening.
His identity was yet to be ascertained.
Another youth, K. Kani (35) of Bethaniapuram was killed earlier in the day, after he was hit by a passenger train when he tried to cross the railway line near Paravai.
The Superintending Engineer, Madurai Electricity Distribution Circle, will convene a grievance day meeting on February 1 at the office of Executive Engineer, Electrical, Samayanallur, from 10.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
