Coimbatore: Traffic was disrupted on Marudhamalai Road during the peak hour on Wednesday morning, when the members of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Farm Workers Union resorted to a road blockade pressing for a charter of five demands.
They demanded a minimum of five days employment in a week throughout the year, weekly holiday on Saturday, Pongal incentive for all farm workers, speeding up the proposal under the consideration of the Government for job permanency of those with ten years of service besides permission to conduct union elections.
In a clarification issued in the evening, the TNAU Registrar, P. Santhana Krishnan, said that five days employment every week throughout the year could not be guaranteed since all farm-related activities at TNAU were seasonal in nature depending on monsoon and water availability. As per Government orders, Pongal bonus/incentive was given to all eligible employees of the University without any deviation. As per Government orders, Provincialised Unskilled Mazdoors should work for six-days a week, other than second Saturdays and Government Holidays. Regarding the conduct of elections, the University said that revised by-laws of the association had been requested.
