Seeks resignation of Karunanidhi, Stalin

  • Demands re-poll to all 155 wards of Chennai Corporation
  • Says elections should not be held under the present SEC

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday demanded that elections to the Chennai Corporation wards and other local bodies in the State should not be held under the guidance of the present State Election Commissioner (SEC).

In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK would not take part in the by-elections slated for February 8. The party had taken a "firm stand" that it would boycott all the local body elections if they were held under the present SEC.

Reiterating her demand for holding re-poll to all the 155 wards of the Chennai Corporation under Army security, she demanded immediate resignation of Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin owning moral responsibility for the irregularities in the local body elections.

She also demanded the resignation of the SEC and the Director General of Police. If they failed to do so, legal steps should be initiated to dismiss them.

    Decision flayed

Ms. Jayalalithaa also flayed the announcement on convening the Corporation council meeting under the chairmanship of the Deputy Mayor. None of the decisions taken by the meeting would be valid or acceptable, she opined. The administration of the civic body should have been handed over to the Corporation Commissioner close on the heels of the High Court verdict, she said. Irregularities had been committed in the civic elections at various places including other Corporations, she added.
