KOMARAPALAYAM: Agrotech, an exhibition highlighting various facets of agriculture, began here on Friday.
In the three-day exhibition, 55 organisations have showcased their products, which range from sugarcane harvesting machine to small nurseries and farms selling saplings.
SSM College of Engineering and its Entrepreneurship Development Cell have organised the event.
Inaugurating the exhibition, former State Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, N.K.K. Periasamy, said agriculture at present was at its nadir, and the Prime Minister himself had taken note of it. He also said agriculture, which still formed the backbone of the Indian economy, should be rejuvenated.
V. Sekar of Yercaud Coffee Curing Pvt. Ltd., said for the past three decades the coffee consumption had remained stagnant at 80,000 tonnes a year while the production had risen to 25.2 lakh tonnes. This was affecting the coffee industry, he added.
K. G. Bhat, manager, Corporation Bank, said his bank had recently opened an exclusive agriculture branch in Coimbatore and would finance agricultural and related activities. V. K. Saminathan of Sakthi Sugars, Appakoodal, called upon the youth to take up agriculture and not go only towards IT and ITES.
Earlier, M.S. Mathivanan, chairman of the College, welcomed the gathering.
