Protest against Highways Department officials

ERODE: All 12 members of Olagadam town panchayat and its president Suganda Palanisamy of PMK have threatened to immolate themselves as a protest against the Highways Department officials.

For construction of drainages on Olagadam main road, NABARD had sanctioned Rs. 10 lakh to the panchayat.

The panchayat at its first meeting decided to construct the drainage and requested the Highways Department officials of Gobichettipalayam to remove encroachments on either side of the road. But there was no reply from the highways officials. So the panchayat president announced an agitation on December 7.

With the initiatives of the police, the Highways Department officials met the panchayat president, members and officials of the panchayat and promised them that they would remove the encroachments. Despite repeated requests, the encroachments have not been removed yet. So the president and the 12 members have threatened to immolate themselves this week. The police and panchayat development departments are taking steps to bring the Highways Department officials to the panchayat for talks to solve it.
