CHENNAI: A Kottivakkam-based pawn broker attacked another pawn broker and his family, including children, with a knife on Saturday in Adyar. He was arrested early on Sunday. A difference of opinion over some pawned jewellery is said to be the reason for the attack.

The police said Babulal (30) of Periyar Street, Kottivakkam, had pawned some jewellery with Kailash (56) of L. B. Road in 2003.

On Saturday, he went to Kailash’s house with some cash and wanted the jewellery back. Since Kailash had closed the shop for the day, he asked him to come next day. But Babulal took out a knife and attacked Kailash.

Kailash’s family, including his wife Sanji (45), daughters Vichitra (15), Trisha (13), Kakna (11) and son Siddhan (6) who tried to intervene, were also attacked. Neighbours rushed after hearing cries from the victims and took them to a hospital in Adyar. The police was informed.

Special team formed

A special team was formed and it arrested Babulal on Sunday when he was trying to escape from the city, the police added. The condition of Kailash is said to be critical.
