Tirupur: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has commissioned four specially designed Base Trans-receiver Stations (BTSs) in Tirupur SDCA (short distance charging area) limits to offer wireless broadband services through Evolution Data Optmised (EVDO) cards, according to M. Venaiah, Deputy General Manager, BSNL.

“The BTSs, erected at Arulpuram, Tirupur city, Somanur and Pitchampalayam Pudur, have been embedded with unique gadgets to make the EVDO cards function and thereby enabling the customers to browse the Internet through their laptop computers at a speed of 2 mbps,” he told The Hindu here.

The cards, according to him, will function on CDMA (code division multiple access) technology.

Mr. Venaiah said that the sale of EVDO cards had commenced through customer service centres situated at Tirupur Main Exchange (Tel: 0421-2205000) and Pitchampalayam Pudur (0421-2473800).

“Cards are available on demand from these centres and it can be purchased at a cost of Rs. 3,500,” he added. The monthly rent was fixed at Rs. 650 with the option of unlimited usage offered to the customers.

An one-time activation charge of Rs. 500 would be levied from the users.

Regarding broadband facility offered through conventional land phones, Mr. Venaiah said that it is now available on-demand in all exchanges under Tirupur SDCA.


“We have now waived the installation charge of Rs. 250 for such broadband connections,” he added.

Mr. Venaiah said that to improve cell phone coverage, a total of 65 cell BTS would be established in areas under Tirupur, Palladam and Avinashi SDCAs before the end of the current financial year.
