SALEM: Over 250 working models, charts and games based on scientific concepts would be displayed at the Scientific Tamil Exhibition scheduled to be held in the Periyar University premises on October 26 and 27.

The exhibition, a joint initiative of Ariviyal Tamil Mandram of Government of Tamil Nadu and Periyar University, is expected to attract over 5,000 students from the schools and colleges in this part of the State.

The organisers received a large number of entries from institutions in different parts of the State for the exhibition. A team of experts selected over 250 working models and exhibits for display.

The working models would help visitors understand various concepts in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, zoology, biology, microbiology, geology, food science, environment, electronics, biochemistry and microbiology, University Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju said.

The primary objective of the initiative was to encourage students to take more interest in science and technology.

“We are trying to motivate the students to learn science in their mother tongue. This exhibition will help students and teachers understand the effectiveness of teaching science subjects in Tamil language,” Mr. Thangaraju added.

The exhibition will be opened for the public at 11 a.m. on October 26 and 9 a.m. on October 27.

The entry to the exhibition is free.

The organisers will select three best working models under each category and distribute cash prizes.

A sum of Rs. 2,000 will be provided as the first prize, Rs. 1,000 as second prize and Rs. 500 as third prize.

In all, the organisers will distribute 54 prizes.
