CHENNAI: The Valasaravakkam police have registered a case against a builder on charges of cheating his friend after promising to construct a house.

Police said Baskaran (36), a civil engineer working in New Delhi, had given Rs.11 lakh to his friend Bharani (36) of Ramavaram in 2006 to construct a house on a piece of land owned by him. The money was arranged as a bank loan by the latter. Though Bharani gave an assurance that the house was fast under completion and house warming ceremony could be planned, Baskaran, who came on a surprise visit to Chennai, realised that the housing plot was empty and no construction activity had taken place.

Baskaran approached Bharani, but he gave vague replies. When repeated attempts to get the money back proved futile, Baskaran gave a petition to the Commissioner of Police T.Rajendran who forwarded it to the Valasaravakkam police.

A case was registered under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of IPC.
