TIRUCHI: For the whole day, Keralites residing in and around Tiruchi, felt at home, rejoicing the cultural programmes performed by artistes, percussionists and musicians from their native land.

The ‘Ponnonam 2009’ festival, organised under the auspices of the Malayalee Association of Tiruchi in the city on Sunday, left behind a festival mood among the people who had gathered in good strength on the occasion.

Separate cultural programmes were organised to suit the interest of the aged persons, women and children. The programmes dedicated to the youths attracted one and all. More colourful were the events that signified the importance of the Onam festival.

The events included ‘Pookkalam’ ‘Vadamvali’ and ‘Singarimelam.’ Mimicir, ‘ganamela’, were other special programmes. The lucky dip attracted people of all age groups.

A youth, Ilyas, painted the image of the District Collector, T. Soundiah, who was the chief guest. The challenge before the youth was to complete the painting within a few minutes in all perfection, well before the completion of a song being sung.
