NEYVELI: The Cuddalore district branch of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics has been carrying on a campaign for creating awareness of adolescent care.

The branch has won laurels at the State and National-level for promoting adolescent care and breastfeeding. Cuddalore is a forerunner in carrying out such tasks on a missionary mode, according to N. Namachivayam, paediatrician and guiding force behind the Academy.

Dr. Namachivayam told The Hindu that adolescents faced emotional turmoil and anxiety due to visible physical changes and craving for recognition. Parents were in a state of confusion over how to fulfil their expectations.

The Academy was distributing booklets titled “The teenager’s health guide” and “How to be good parents” to help parents and their wards. The booklets dealt with adolescent problems and how to overcome them.

Dr. Namachivayam said that the booklets were distributed to thousands of people during the Child and Adolescent Week Celebrations held here.

Academy secretary A. Chenthil said that the booklets focussed on all facets of adolescent problems such as sex education and personal hygiene.

Dr. Chenthil said parents also needed tutoring on intricacies of adolescence and course corrections wherever deviations are found. The life-skills that ought to be imbibed include self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, problem solving, effective communication, impersonal relationship, and, coping with emotions and stress.

Diet, exercise and rest also play a vital role in physical and mental make-up of the adolescents.

Parents should act as a role model and lend a patient hearing to the problems of their wards, by spending time with them, Dr. Chenthil said.
