Tirupur: A special team constituted by District Collector C. Samayamoorthy rescued one child worker and two adolescent boys from industrial and catering establishments during raids conducted on Friday.

The team headed by Inspector of Labour G. Sasikala and comprising officials from Inspectorate of Factories, labour, police and revenue departments and National Child Labour Project (NCLP) inspected 89 firms situated along Tirupur-Palladam and Tirupur-Perumanallur roads.

The NCLP project director, D. Vijayakumar, told reporters that Subramani (13) was employed at a hosiery unit. “Since the boy is from Erode district, we will take steps to enrol him into mainstream education in that district,” he said. Action would be initiated against the employer under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.

Mr. Vijayakumar said that the adolescent boys- Viji (15) and Sakthivel (15) - were picked up from a hotel and bakery at Thaneerpandhal, respectively.

“The case will be charged against the owners of the catering establishments since they failed to keep the birth certificates of the children employed, which is mandatory in the case of adolescent children,” he added.

The NCLP project director said that as many as 28 child workers had, so far, been rescued in the district this fiscal.
