KARAIKAL: A Rs.130-crore scheme to provide housing facility for Adi Dravidars in the district will be taken up with HUDCO support shortly, Puducherry Welfare and Co-operatives Minister M. Kandasamy said here on Monday.

The Minister had inspected 30-year old houses built for the Adi Dravidars under old schemes in Kottuchery and Varichikudy with M.Ramadass, MP, and N. Vasanthakumar, District Collector, and heard complaints from the locals that they were in a dilapidated condition.

Following this, he said that a plan to build houses for the Adi Dravidars in the district at a unit cost of Rs.3.5-lakh was being considered by the government.

Later, speaking at a function organised to celebrate the 55th National Co-operative Week, the Minister said that a comprehensive study of all loss-making co-operative institutions would be undertaken soon, and proposals to improve their functioning would be taken up.

He said that Rs.6-crore would be given the Jayaprakash Co-operative Spinning Mill immediately for buying of cotton yarn and that training would be given to women SHGs interested in weaving products. Vegetable prices would also be stabilised by sale through the Pondicherry Agro Products Civil Supplies Corporation.

The Minister later distributed certificates for loan waivers worth Rs.1.71 crore to 649 beneficiaries. Leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly A.M.H. Nazim presided over the function.
