CHENNAI: Two women, who robbed city bus commuters with the assistance of kids, were apprehended by the Mylapore police after they allegedly attempted to purchase goods with a stolen credit card belonging to one of their victims.

Police said Sumathi (29) and Lakshmi (22), both native of Maduranthagam, had trained their children to pick pockets and steal from handbags and had victimised many commuters, especially women.

On Friday morning, the duo robbed one Mangaiyarkarasi (35) of Madipakkam in a similar fashion while travelling in an MTC bus to Mylapore. The victim put up a resistance after catching the women red-handed but only to be threatened with a knife by the culprits before fleeing with her wallet containing her credit card and cash. Mangaiyarkarasi lodged a complaint with the Mylapore police.

On the same day, the two women tried to purchase goods at a department store on Kutchery Road with Mangaiyarkarasi’s credit card. Following a tip-off by the store manager, the police nabbed the duo. The two were remanded to custody on Saturday, police said.
