At proposed sites in Vadapalanji and Ilanthaikulam
MADURAI: The dream of having an IT park in Madurai took a concrete shape on Saturday with commencement of work on provision of infrastructure at the proposed sites in Vadapalanji and Ilanthaikulam.
Road laying work began at Ilanthaikulam site, spread over 245.17 acres, began in the presence of P. W. C. Davidar, Secretary, Information Technology, Santhosh Babu, Managing Director, Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, and representatives of NASSCOM and leading IT companies like HCL and Sutherland.
Mr. Davidar said that infrastructure would be created at a cost of Rs 15.3 crore at Vadapalanji and Rs 7.5 crore at Ilanthaikulam.
He was hopeful that the IT companies, for whom land delivery certificates were handed over at the valedictory session of Southern Prosperity through Enhanced Economic Development 2008, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry on Saturday, would be in a position to complete civil work in a year.
Dr. Santhosh Babu said that the ELCOT would develop one lakh square feet of area at the proposed parks for use by small and medium software units.
The two parks would provide direct employment to about 50, 000 people, most of whom would be from the southern districts. Employment nearer home would also bring down the attrition rate in IT companies, he said.
A sub-station of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board would be set up on an area of 14 acres at Vadapalanji.
