Tuticorin: Superintendent of Police Deepak M. Damor said that security was beefed up in the city ahead of the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on Saturday.

Security was stepped up in vital installations like airport and railway station apart from other busy areas with the installation of metal detectors. Police personnel at various check posts in the district were keeping a close watch on vehicles and were carrying out checks in Third Mile, Muthiapuram, Melakaranthai, Kayathar, Kovilpatti, Arumuganeri, Vallanadu, Seithunganallur and Periyathalai limits. About 57 persons were arrested as a precautionary measure.
