This has reference to the news report ‘Telephone exchanges in Tirunelveli to be upgraded’ (The Hindu, October 31).

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s Tirunelveli telecom district has undertaken hi-tech upgrading of telephone exchanges in rural areas.

It is a welcome move that rural teledensity is improved, which is a revolution done for the common man.

However, I am to state that subscribers in Tirunelveli who have registered their names for broadband connections have to wait for long . Those who have registered their names in July last have yet to be get the connections. Internet users prefer BSNL because of its speed, undisrupted connectivity and a comparatively low tariff.

S. Nallasivan,

Provide lights

SPK Centre for Environmental Sciences, satellite campus of M. S. University, functions in Alwarkurichi. There are no proper light facilities near the main entrance near the bus stop.

It is inconvenient for students and staff who leave the campus after 6 p.m. It will be better if a sodium vapour lamp is fitted in the post located opposite the bus stop. I request officials of Manthiyoor panchayat and electricity department to look into the matter for necessary action.

Construct foot overbridges

This refers to the demand for constructing foot overbridges across the arterial roads in Tuticorin. To mention a few, the Tuticorin – Palayamkottai, the Tuticorin-Madurai and the Tuticorin-Tiruchendur Roads are in dire need of foot overbridges.

Buses bound for destinations such as Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchendur and Kanyakumari are passing through these three arterial roads. Besides, heavy vehicles are also zipping through the roads.

In the melee of the fast-moving vehicles, the pedestrians are being left high and dry. In the context of no proper speed-breakers or no foot overbridges at the stretch of the roads, the chances of the pedestrians being hit by the vehicles are high.

I request highways authorities and other officials to establish foot overbridges across Palayamkottai, Madurai and Tiruchendur Roads in Tuticorin.

Tuition classes

Tuition classes flourish everywhere and parents send their students as soon as they reach home from the schools. The students are denied leisure and tuition is handled in the morning and evening even in villages.

No time is spared for entertainment and play, with the result students are dull now-a-days. As students are considered a nuisance, they are forced to attend tuition classes irrespective of whether the students are receptive to the class or not.

Some school teachers are handling tuition classes in several places. It is time some regulations were made with respect to tuition classes.

Redressal of grievances

Grievance petitions are received from public for redressal by Collectors . Subsequently, these petitions are sent to subordinates for disposal within a particular time.

The petitioners are informed of the nature of disposal by the officers concerned.

Whether the grievances of the public are redressed judiciously or not is not at all examined by Collectors, as a follow-up action.
