Residents submit petition to Collector, seek intervention

TIRUNELVELI: As no step has been taken by the officials to check the flow of underground drainage water released from the last pond of the effluent treatment yard at Ramaiyanpatti into an irrigation channel, a group of residents from Ramaiyanpatti near here submitted a petition to Collector G. Prakash on Monday, urging him to intervene in the issue and save the public from possible outbreak of dreaded communicable disease.

Sewage water of Tirunelveli Corporation’s underground drainage programme is being treated in eight open ponds dug at Ramaiyanpatti by TWAD Board, which executed the project for Tirunelveli Corporation. Since the corporation announced that the treated water from the eighth tank would be utilised for cultivating fodder on a few hundreds of acres belonging to Department of Animal Husbandry, the locals’ fear of contamination of water bodies and groundwater was dispelled.

However, this arrangement never took off, resulting in the mixing up of the treated sewage water in pale green colour with the water for irrigation flowing through Kodagan Channel, taking water to Chaththram Puthukkulam, Ilanthaikulam and Seeniyappankulam.

“Since this contaminated water may trigger outbreak of communicable waterborne diseases during monsoon, the Collector should intervene in the issue immediately to save the public,” they appealed.
