MADURAI: The Madurai Divisional Railway authorities have stepped up vigilance to prevent passengers from carrying crackers in trains.
“Though the security agencies have been doing it, even the travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) will look out for crackers in compartments,” the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, L. Veera Narayanan, said.
Stating that carrying dangerous articles, including inflammable items like crackers, was banned, he said the safety of passengers would not be compromised at any cost as any fire in running train could put the property and lives of passengers in peril.
The Railway Protection Force, Madurai Inspector, K.S. Kannan, said that special teams had been formed to detect crackers.
People found with crackers could be fined up to Rs. 1,000 or imprisoned under the provisions of Railway Act.
“People should know that safety is of utmost importance. Not only external spark needs to ignite the crackers, some of the crackers themselves can go up in flames due to friction and other reasons,” he said.
The teams had been conducting random checks of parcels and passenger luggage, Mr. Kannan added.
