VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Communist Party of India MLA, T. Ramasamy, condemned the failure of Indian Navy to stop fishermen from Tamil Nadu being killed by the Sri Lankan Navy on the high seas.

Presiding over a fast organised by the party here on Thursday to protest the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka, he said that while the Indian Government failed to protect the Indian fishermen, it was helping the Sri Lankan military force that was massacring the Tamils there.

He urged the Centre to stop military cooperation with the island nation and urged the State and the Centre to bring the fighting groups to the negotiating table for peacefully solving the issue.

“Only because the war between the Tamils and the Sri Lankan forces do the fishermen from Tamil Nadu are not able to go in for their daily catch peacefully and many are shot dead,” the MLA representing Srivilliputtur constituency said.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP A. Ravichandran, Virudhunagar MLA R. Varadharajan, former MP V. Azhagirisamy and party district secretaries R.M. Shanmugasundaram (MDMK), S. Balasubramanian (Communist Party of India-Marxist), Sathyamoorthy (Puthiya Tamilagam) were among those who participated in the daylong fast.
