CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi on Monday demanded that the Congress be accommodated in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government.

Addressing a press conference here, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said he was always for giving the Congress a share in power. “How can a party with 96 legislators run a government of its own?”

As for Puducherry, he said there should be no problem for the DMK to be given ministerial positions in the government.

Formula backed

Referring to the Southern India Mills’ Association proposal for a cost-sharing formula to facilitate the use of diesel generators by High Tension consumers for captive consumption, Dr. Ramadoss wanted the government to accept it as the cost of power would work out to be Rs.6.41 a unit, whereas the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was purchasing power from other States at prices ranging from Rs.8 to Rs.11 a unit.

Expressing concern over the financial health of the TNEB, he claimed that some experts had said that it would go bankrupt in a few years if corrective measures were not taken. He wanted Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to pay personal attention to problems concerning the power sector.

Judicial appointments

Dr. Ramadoss wanted appointments in higher judiciary to be made in a transparent manner. Calling for due representation to members of other backward classes, scheduled castes/scheduled tribes, minorities and women, he said reports of the Parliamentary Committee headed by E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan of the Congress and the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution [headed by M.N. Venkatachaliah] had made recommendations to this effect.

He said two members of the collegium of judges, who made recommendations on the appointments, should be from Tamil Nadu.

The PMK leader had written to the President, the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India in January on this issue. The Union Law Ministry in March asked the Registrar General of the Madras High Court to look into the grievances.
