CHENNAI: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized 1.05 kg of Amphetamine, a psychotropic substance, from a Bangkok-bound passenger at the Chennai airport on Monday night and arrested him.

Parminder Singh, Commissioner of Customs, Airport, said the officials intercepted Son Piseth, 25, a Cambodian, on suspicion that he was carrying contraband/restricted items.

His suitcase, taken as checked-in luggage, raised doubts. A check revealed that the bottom part was tampered with.

The removal of the inner cloth lining revealed that the bottom portion was also tampered with. When it was broken open, a polythene packet was found between two plastic layers.

A test revealed that it was a psychotropic substance.

The passenger admitted to having agreed to carry the contraband to Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, in return for $1,000. The substance would go for Rs. 20 lakh in the international market, Mr Singh said.
