TAMBARAM: Teachers mould the future leaders of the nation, but society has done very little to them, and much more needs to be done, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, said on Friday.

Speaking at the Teachers’ Day celebrations at Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Indira Nagar, Selaiyur, near Tambaram, Mr. Murali said teachers moulded not just the minds of students, but their character; some times, their influence on students was much more than that of parents.

“Teachers are among the most harassed lot,” he said, and society ought to do much more to them. Teachers guided the children to become responsible and good citizens, so “we need to give them more recognition.”

Describing the school as a progressive institution, Mr. Murali noted there were more than 500 teachers who taught 13,000 students in the school that was started in 1986.

Mr. Murali also gave away prizes to teachers. Students presented cultural programmes. N. Vijayan, correspondent, was also present.
