“Oorum uravum” scheme introduced for villagers

MADURAI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has introduced pre-paid services in wireless in local loop (WLL) phones in Madurai telecom district, except for Madurai city and Dindigul town.

Handing over the first pre-paid service handset to a customer, P. Nirmal Kumar, here on Tuesday, its General Manager, V.K. Sanjeevi, said roaming facility would be introduced to the now limited mobility service.

People, who have CDMA-enabled handsets, could opt for general plan on payment of Rs. 225 for activation of the SIM card. The SIM comes with a talk value of Rs. 150 and validity for 30 days. The customers could get handsets in Plan 1, Plan 2 and Plan 3 on payment of Rs. 1,675, Rs. 1,825 and Rs. 2,325 (including activation charges) respectively and get an additional talktime for Rs. 750 with a validity for 90 days.

Stating that the call charges for the pre-paid WLL services has been fixed at a lower rate to benefit the rural customers, Mr. Sanjeevi said that the outgoing local call charges to BSNL network was 60 paise a minute (to mobile, WLL and landline) and 90 paise a minute for other networks. The long distance calls to any network was only Rs. 1.20 a minute, he added.

The public sector telecom operator has introduced a new scheme, “oorum uravum”, for the people in rural villages where new mobile towers have been commissioned. The local call charges for the calls made among the numbers starting with 94876 would be charged at 40 paise a minute. Call charges for other numbers would be as per the pre-paid general plan.

The service was presently available under Sirumalai, Vadapalanji, Kadamalikundu, Rajdhani, Tiruvadavur, Ayyampalayam, Silukkuvarpatti, Uthangudi. This would be extended to other rural areas that would be covered by 60 mobile towers to be commissioned by October-end.

Mr. Sanjeevi said that the BSNL had introduced a rate-cutter voucher and a recharge coupon. Any pre-paid customer could make local calls to BSNL network at 50 paise a minute and other network at 60 paise on using the combo-69 voucher. The voucher that cost Rs. 69 has a validity of 30 days and enables the customer to send 2000 free local SMS.

The recharge, of Rs. 199, would enable customers to make calls at 10 paise a minute to BSNL mobile and 70 paise for BSNL landline and other mobiles and landlines. It comes with a talk value for Rs. 80 with 30 days validity. STD and ISD charges will be as per general pre-paid plan. However, no top-up coupons would be permitted along with the recharge coupon. The benefit of reduced rate is restricted up to the talk value of Rs. 80 or within the validity period.
