CHENNAI: Presidency College, Chennai has been selected as the best Arts and Science college in the state for the academic year 2006-07. A.C. College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi has won the award in the engineering college category, while the Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College, Vallam has been declared best in the Polytechnic category.

The Principals of the institutions will receive the award from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in a function to be held at Anna University, Chennai on Monday evening. The awards were open to all government and aided colleges in the state.

The academic record of students, infrastructure facilities and the number and quality of teaching faculty were all taken into account by the judging committee headed by Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education vice chairman A. Ramasamy.

Ten “Best Teacher” awards, which include a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each, will also be presented by the Chief Minister.

Six “Best Scholar” awards, including cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 each, will be presented to college teachers, who were judged on the basis of the number of publications they contributed papers to, the number of PhD students guided, and other such criteria.
