RAMANATHAPURAM: Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar said here that permission would not be given to the organisers of Vinayaka Chathurti celebrations to carry out procession on new routes.

He told The Hindu here on Monday that they could carry out procession on routes permitted last year. Similarly, they could not install idols at new locations except the places where they were permitted last year. Mr. Kumar said that the organisers should apply for permission to the Deputy Superintendent of Police. All idols would be given police protection. Elaborate security arrangement would be in place throughout the district during Chathurti celebrations. Revenue officials would call for a peace meeting with local leaders of Naripaiyur in view of the Chathurti festival.

Immersion places had also been identified. The organisers should avoid installing chemical- coated idols. It was advised that potters should make only clay idols.

Strike withdrawn

He said the indefinite strike by mechanised boats of Mandapam demanding the revival of supply of subsidised diesel to fishermen had been withdrawn. The fishermen, who met him on Monday were told that shortage of diesel was the main reason for the supply disruption. It was decided to start within a week one more diesel bunk for boats at Mandapam jetty.

The Tamil Nadu Fisheries Development Corporation would run the bunk. The district administration would ensure the supply of diesel to all eligible fishermen.
