‘Rules will be same for Aavin dealers and private vendors’
Udhagamandalam: Sale of adulterated or sub standard milk and transport of milk in unsafe or unhygienic containers will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act.
Stating that this warning was conveyed by civic officials on behalf of the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine here on Tuesday,the Medical Officer, Udhagamandalam Municipality K. Poonkodi told The Hindu that it was to mark the observance of Milk Raid Day.
The action initiated was the first of its kind. Pointing out that the rules will be the same for both dealers of Aavin milk and private milk, she said that the objective was to ensure that consumers are supplied clean, wholesome milk in hygienic containers.
Milk should be transported only in stainless steel vessels, which were washed with hot water, she said and added that in raids conducted by food and sanitary inspectors in various parts of the municipality on Tuesday 39 vendors were found to be selling milk without permit.
About 10 litres of milk which were in dirty containers were destroyed. If the public came across vendors selling milk in plastic bottles or aluminium cans they should contact telephone numbers 2223242 or 94430 95762.
