KARAIKAL: Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry has ranked first in the country in disbursal of wages through the banks to the casual workers engaged under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme, said Collector N. Vasanthakumar here on Monday.

The Collector said that workers were given employment for a period of 100 days per year during the lean season for works like desilting of irrigation channels, creation of ponds and laying of mud roads.

He said that the district administration issued identity cards under the NREG scheme and asked the workers to open savings bank accounts with banks near their residence. In all, 12,894 workers were engaged under the NREG in the district and each worker earned an average Rs.80 per day.

Dr.Vasanthakumar said that 5,377 workers had opened savings bank account with the Indian Overseas Bank’s branches at Ambagarathur, Tirunallar, Nedungadu and T.R.Pattinam followed by Bank of India, Tirunallar 2,597, Puducherry State Co-operative Bank, T.R.Pattinam 1,500, Indian Bank, Neravy 1,336, State Bank of India, Kottucherry, 1,143 and Primary Agricultural Co-operative Bank, Varichikudi, 941.
