CHENNAI: The Outreach Department of Loyola College and non-governmental organisation New Life organised a programme here to distribute scholarships to 600 students on Sunday.

“The students who received the scholarship included 12 medical students and 72 engineering students who had studied in Corporation schools of Chennai and secured more than 70 per cent in the higher secondary examinations,” said S.John Kaviarasu of the Outreach Department.

“Medical students were given Rs.15,000 and arts college students were given Rs.1,250 each.

A total of Rs.4.50 lakh was given away to the engineering students,” he added. M.Mahadevan, managing director of Hot Breads, was the main sponsor of the scholarship programme.

Outreach activities

The students, as part of Outreach activities, work in areas of women empowerment, regular school teaching, teaching in day care centres, non-formal education, youth welfare, health and sanitation and evening tuition. “The outreach programme of Loyola College carries 4 credit points and is compulsory for all students,” said Mr. Kaviarasu.
