COIMBATORE: Nearly 50 per cent of the salaried assessees had filed their returns so far, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Coimbatore, Prema Malini Vasan, has said

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, she said that the region had about three lakh assesses and the income tax revenue target for this region during this financial year was Rs. 2,236 crore. The amount collected last year was Rs. 1,782 crore as against the target of Rs. 2,084 crore.

Ms. Vasan appealed to the public to file their returns before the last date (July 31) at the special counters at all its offices in the region. The counters would function from 9.30 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. UTI has also opened a desk for those seeking PAN card. The Coimbatore region covered Tirupur, Erode, Pollachi and Udhagamandalam.

She said the next step would be to figure out the non-filers. The department had identified those who had not filed the returns last year and sent out letters to them. It had conducted 19 surveys in the last three to four months.
