Minister says India badly needs nuclear power

CHENNAI: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan on Sunday accused the communist parties of adopting double standards on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Addressing the 9th State conference of the Indian National Rural Labour Federation (INRLF), Mr. Elangovan said the communists also have differences among themselves over the deal. He said he could not be equivocal in his criticism against the communists like some of his party colleagues.

On the BJP’s opposition to the deal, he said it was the party that took the initiatives for the agreement with the US.

Mr. Elangovan said India badly needed nuclear power since all other sources of power generation have been exhausted. “Thermal power plants are hazardous to the environment. We have also exhausted hydel power projects and wind energy sources,” he added.

Explaining the steps taken by the DMK government to help the landless labourers, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said 1.5 lakh acres of land have been distributed so far.
