Chased by dogs, it strayed into residential area

TAMBARAM: A female spotted deer that strayed into a residential area on the fringes of Vandalur Reserve Forest area after being chased by a pack of dogs, fell into a dry well on Friday night. It was rescued Saturday morning.

Forest Department officials said that the deer, about three years old, had fallen into the well in a house in Karanai Puduchery village near the Vandalur Reserve Forest.

Though there was a protective wall — three feet high and three feet wide — around the well, the deer must have tried to jump over it, resulting in its fall into the 25-foot-deep well, the officials said.

On Saturday morning, an inmate of the house noticed the deer inside the well. Residents soon informed personnel of the Forest Department at Vandalur and Tambaram.

A team of forest officials and doctors from the Arignar Anna Zoological Park Hospital rushed to the spot. The Forest Department employees were initially reluctant to enter the narrow well. Further, deer are sensitive and delicate animals. After tranquilising the deer, an employee entered the well, tied a piece of cloth around its eyes and pulled it out using a rope. The animal was rushed to hospital, where it is being treated for injuries.
