CHENNAI: A three-year-old girl in Thiruneermalai suffered head injuries when a piece of stone from a quarry near her house fell on her on Wednesday. Following this, angry residents went on a rampage and ransacked the office of the contractor of the private quarry.

Vehicles, including a lorry and an earthmover parked there, were set on fire. Fire tenders from the Tambaram Fire and Rescue Services put out the fire.

Police personnel were posted near the quarry to restore normality.

Police sources said the residents’ reaction followed rumours about the deteriorating condition of the child, Divya.

The injuries were not major and the child was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chromepet.

Divya, daughter of a casual labourer Annamalai, was injured when the piece of stone came flying from the quarry. It fell on the child’s head even as she was playing inside her hut in Thirumangai Azhwar Puram under Thiruneermalai town panchayat limits.

Residents of the area and relatives of Annamalai demanded that quarry owner be arrested for negligence.

The Sankar Nagar police are investigating.
