COIMBATORE: Commissioner of Revenue Administration Shakti Kanta Das will preside over two meetings – one in Coimbatore and the other at Tirupur – on July 22 to elicit the views of various sections of the public on the proposal to make Tirupur a district.

A major knitwear manufacturing and export region, Tirupur is now a part of the Coimbatore district.

After upgrading Tirupur into a city corporation from a municipality, the government will now assess the demand among people for making it a district.

The proposal involves merging three municipalities and a number of town and village panchayats with the Tirupur Corporation.

The views of Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, elected representatives of local bodies and also representatives of the trade and industry and other organisations will be heard at the meeting in Coimbatore at the Coimbatore Collectorate at 10 a.m.

A similar meeting will be held at Velan Hotel at Tirupur at 4 p.m. that day.

Coimbatore Collector V. Palanikumar said on Monday that people could present their views in person at the meetings or send these through letters to the district administration.
