VELLORE: The Vellore district administration has mooted a proposal to bring four more municipalities — Arcot, Ranipet, Walajapet and Tharapadavedu — four more town panchayats and 32 more village panchayats under the proposed Vellore Corporation, to be formed by upgrading the Vellore Municipality.
By a resolution passed at an emergency meeting of the Vellore Municipal Council presided over by Vellore Municipal Chairman P. Karthikeyan on June 9, the Vellore Municipality had recommended to the Tamil Nadu government and the Vellore District Collector, the inclusion of the following third grade municipalities, four special grade town panchayats, 23 village panchayats and two reserve forest (RF) areas in the proposed Vellore Corporation to be formed by upgrading the Vellore Municipality:
Third Grade Municipalities — Sathuvachari and Melvisharam; special grade town panchayats — Shenbakkam, Thorappadi, Allapuram and Pennathur; village panchayats — Alamelu Rangapuram, Perumugai, Venkatapuram, Arapakkam, Poottuthacku, Keezhminnal, Nandhiyalam, Konavattam, Ariyoor, Chitheri, Viruppakshipuram, Palavansathu, Idayansathu, Thuthipattu, Adukkamparai, Karugambathur, Sadhupperi, Sirukanji, Abdullapuram, Kuppam, Sembedu, Keezhmonavur and Melmonavur; RF areas — Vellore RF and Palamathi RF.
Following requests from the people living in the urban local bodies coming under the Katpadi Assembly Constituency and located closer to Vellore, the State government decided to include the Katpadi town panchayat and nearby village and town panchayats and the Tharapadavedu Third Grade Municipality under the Vellore Corporation. This led to proposals for inclusion of three more municipalities (in addition to Tharapadavedu), four more town panchayats and 32 more village panchayats in the proposed Vellore Corporation.
At a meeting convened at the Collectorate here on Thursday, the Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav sought resolutions from the chairpersons of the Arcot, Ranipet, Walajapet and Tharapadavedu municipalities, the presidents of the town panchayats of Kazhinjur, Gandhinagar, Katpadi and Tiruvalam and the heads of the following 32 village panchayats seeking the inclusion of their local bodies in the Vellore Corporation:
Virudhambut, Kangeyanallur, Thandalam Krishnapuram, Vanjur, Jaffrapet, Vandaranthangal, Karigiri, Kandippedu, Serkadu, Erthangal, Sembarayanallur, Arimuthumottur, Ammundi, Karnambut, Arumbaruthi, Sevoor, Brammapuram and Puthur (all in Katpadi panchayat union).
Vanapadi, Settithangal, Manjambattu, Narasingapuram, Navlock, Manthangal, Veppur, Thengal, Mukundarayapuram, Sikkarajapuram, Lalapet, Vannivedu, Manthangal and V.C. Mottur (all in Walajapet panchayat union), Anpoondi (Vellore panchayat union).
The Collector told The Hindu that the Vellore Municipal chairman has been asked to convene a meeting of the municipal council and pass a fresh resolution seeking the annexation of all the above local bodies to Vellore Municipality.
