Preliminary meeting on ‘Aadi Amavasai’ celebrations

Self-Help Groups will conduct a week-long exhibition of their products

Dog show and fashion parade will be additional attractions this year

TIRUNELVELI: ‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa 2008,’ a week-long annual carnival to attract and enthral the tourists converging at Courtallam will be conducted in the second week of August, District Collector (In-Charge) G. Srinivasan has informed.

Addressing the ‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa 2008’ preparatory meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday, Mr. Srinivasan said the best cultural programmes, sports events and various competitions would be conducted everyday as part of the annual fiesta.

Apart from the regular events conducted in the previous years, ‘Dog Show’ and fashion parade would be additional attractions this year.

While asking the Courtallam Town Panchayat administration to beautify the cottages, swimming pool, parks and ‘Kalaivaanar Kalaiyarangam,’ the venue for ‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa’ functions and cultural events, Mr. Srinivasan told the police to deploy police personnel in adequate numbers to ensure foolproof security for the tourist visiting the ‘Spa of the South.’

He said that the members of self-help groups would conduct a week-long exhibition of their products during ‘Saaral Thiruvizhaa.’

Tenkasi Revenue Divisional Officer, Dayalan, Joint Director, Health Services, Ramasubbu, Tourist Officer T. Chellappa, Public Relations Officer U. Ravindran, District Sports Officer A. Santhan, Executive Officer of Courtallam Town Panchayat Rasaiah and others participated.

Water release

In the preparatory meeting for ‘Aadi amavasai’ celebrations of Sorimuthu Ayyanar Temple on the Western Ghats near Papanasam, Mr. Srinivasan told the Public Works Department officials to release 500 to 1,500 cusecs of water from Papanasam dam between July 29 and August 4.

He asked the Health Services, Police and Fire and Rescue Services Department to take extra efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of the celebrations.

‘Aadi thavasu’

Similar meeting was also conducted to sensitise the officials on the arrangements to be made for the ‘Aadi thavasu’ festival to be held at Sri Sankaranarayana Swamy Temple at Sankarankovil for eleven days from August 4.
