CHENNAI: A team Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials seized several 20-litre drinking water containers with fake ISI marks during a raid on a packaged drinking water unit in Mudichur near Tambaram on Tuesday.

The officials of BIS’ Southern Regional Office seized the water containers that were being marketed under ‘Nigra,’ ‘Klass,’ ‘Manatsa,’ ‘Joy,’ ‘Image’ and ‘Mercury’ brand names from the premises of Nigra Mineral Water Private Ltd on Mudichur Main Road, Lakshmi Nagar, Mudichur.

Without valid licence

The unit was operating without a valid licence to use the ISI mark, a release said. The southern regional office of BIS has initiated action against the offender under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986.

The offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to Rs.50,000 or both.

Those who come across instances of misuse of ISI mark may inform the BIS office located on CIT campus, 4th Cross Road, Taramani, or provide information by e-mail to sro@bis.org.in.

The source of such information would be kept confidential, the release said.
