K. Ananda Kannan, Inspector, Medical Council of India (South Zone):
It is not that the government is not spending and the doctor is happy that he has done his job well. But patients’ expectations are high and they feel frustrated. Products are delivered well but the way the service is provided is not proper. Poor ambiance and lack of communication with the patient’s relatives by the hospital staff upsets the patient. Doctors avoid talking because patients have too many questions and end up doubting the doctor’s integrity. A doctor is the leader in the healthcare delivery system and needs expertise in communication and management. Four years ago, we recommended to the Union Health Ministry that these courses be included in the medical curriculum. Action is still awaited.
