The scheme on trial basis was launched at the zoo recently
CHENNAI: A scheme under which bicycles are available on hire for visitors, including some for children, has been launched on a trial basis at the Vandalur Zoo.
It was launched recently, Zoo Director P. L. Ananthasamy said.
20 vehicles introduced
A total of 20 bicycles, including five for children, have been introduced at the zoo by a private bicycle manufacturer.
Rs.20 an hour
At present a couple of staff from the company rent out the bicycles Rs 20 an hour.
The zoo authorities said they were yet to decide on whether to allow the company to operate the service for a longer period, the charges, and the safeguards to prevent theft of the bicycles from the zoo, they said.
Also, permission from the State government had to be obtained before formally launching the system.
The bicycles were an eco-friendly option and would, to a great extent, reduce the demand for the battery-operated cars, particularly during holiday seasons.
On holidays now, a lot of people wait for the battery-operated cars to go around the zoo. Some of them find it difficult to cover the entire zoo in a day. Introduction of bicycles would help particularly, the youth, middle-aged men and women and their wards, the zoo authorities said.
Once the government provides sanction for the programme, the authorities were planning to introduce nearly 50 bicycles.
