TIRUCHI: The underground sewer system in the city, executed under the National River Conservation Programme, is all set for commissioning.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will commission the system here on Tuesday, along with a slew of other development projects, though the highlight would be the laying of foundation stone for a flood prevention scheme and other works of the Public Works Department.

The sewer system, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.116.67 crore for Srirangam, Golden Rock and the omitted areas in the erstwhile Tiruchi Municipal areas, has taken about five years for completion. The last major hurdle in the execution of the project, the construction of a new pumping station on Vasudevan Street at Thiruvanaikovil (owing to a land dispute), had been overcome and the station is ready for operation.

The sewer system would run for a distance of about 183 kilometres with over 6,500 manholes and a capacity to add over 23,775 new house connections. It will carry about 86 million litres of sewage a day. Nineteen major pumping stations and 26 minor stations will pump the city’s sewage to the new and expanded sewage treatment plant at Panchapur in the outskirts. The Corporation has announced that it would soon start giving house connections and has decided to appoint contractors for completing the task.

New RTO

Among the other major projects to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, apart from Rs.700 crore worth of works by the Public Works Department, would be the new Regional Transport Office constructed at Pirattiyur on the Tiruchi-Dindigul highway. The new building, built at a cost of Rs.148 lakh, will have a vehicle testing track. It will also house the Regional Deputy Transport Commissioner’s office, now functioning from a rented building at Khajamalai.

The expanded Central Bus Stand and the new market complex at Wallajah Road in Woraiyur, both executed by the Corporation, and new taluk office buildings for Manachanallur, Thottiyam and Srirangam would be declared open by Mr. Karunanidhi. He would also lay foundation stone for laying astro turf for hockey at Anna Stadium and a new postgraduate students’ hostel for K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College.
