SBI’s cash award is expected to encourage rural students to do well in public examinations
TIRUCHI: For Plus Two top-scorers of Government Higher Secondary School, Somarasanpettai, the ‘Certificate of Excellence’ awarded by the State Bank of India could not have come at a better time.
The honour came to each of the six students on Tuesday in the form of a cash award of Rs. 1,001, a newly opened savings bank account in the name of the student and an in-principle sanction letter for education loan under ‘SBI Talent Awards Scheme’. The school is the first in the district to be chosen under the scheme.
Expressing gratitudeto the SBI on behalf of teaching and non-teaching staff, Headmaster S. Christopher Premkumar saw in the scheme encouragement for rural students to perform well in public examinations.
Three students from the science stream: P.M. Divya, R. Ravikumar and M. Kesavan, and three from arts and commerce streams: G. Amutha, L. Kohila and B. Shanmugam received the honours. Sweets were distributed to all the students on the occasion.
Honouring the students in the presence of District Educational Officer S. Rajendran and Trainee DEO Vasu, Assistant General Manager, SBI (Main) V.S. Radhakrishnan felt that such encouragement would motivate students to obtain State-level ranks in future. He also highlighted the Bank’s contribution to society through community services and various schemes. K. Vasudevan, organising secretary, State Banks Staff Union and S. Anandan, Unit Secretary, State Bank Officers’ Association, were among the other speakers to felicitate the award-winning students.
