TIRUCHI: Water released from the Mettur Reservoir reached the Upper Anicut (Mukkombu) near Tiruchi on Sunday.

According to PWD officials, about 12,967 cusecs of water was being released into the Cauvery from the Upper Anicut and the water would reach the Grand Anicut downstream tonight. The water would be released for irrigation from Grand Anicut on Monday.

The release of the water in time this year and the good storage position at Mettur had raised hopes of a good kuruvai season in the delta districts, where a little over two lakh hectares are covered under it.

Though farmers have largely been enthused, a section of them are worried over the availability of quality seeds. They also insisted that the PWD should ensure close and micro-level monitoring to ensure that the water reached the tail-end areas.

Meanwhile, the froth-filled freshes in the Cauvery attracted scores of people to its banks. Construction work on various new drinking water supply schemes that have the sources on the river bed, including the Ramanathapuram Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, have been suspended in the wake of the flow. The release of the water also witnessed a hectic last minute rush to carry sand from the quarries in the river. Long queues of lorries were lining up along the river round the clock over the past few days. The narrow Musiri Road, the main access road for the lorries, struggled to cope with the heavy and sudden traffic. Traffic snarls became frequent on the road and as well as the Karur Road.

The activity would now shift to the sand quarries in the Coleroon River. PWD sources indicated that the quarries at Kariyamanickam, Thodaiyur and Nochiam were functioning now.
