Most applications are for new ration cards, change of address
CHENNAI: The Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department conducted its monthly grievance day meeting in 14 places in the city on Saturday.
A majority of applications submitted at the meeting was for new ration cards, change of address and addition and deletion of names in the cards. Officials present at the meeting explained the procedures for applying for new cards.
Many applicants for new cards said they had got married recently and were not residing with their parents. They were told that new cards could be given only if they had deleted their names from their previous cards. Residents complained though they had submitted applications a year ago, they did not get the new cards. The officials agreed to look into their complaints.
Change of address in the cards was made on the spot on production of proof for the new address. Cardholders who wanted to include their new born child name were asked to produce the birth certificate. In case of deletion of the name of a deceased member of the family, cardholders were asked to produce the death certificate.
Officials from the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and TUCS which run fair price shops were also present. There were complaints of short measurement and erratic supply of commodities. Civil Supplies Department officials assured them that their complaints would be looked into.
Residents who did not have ration cards and had applied for no objection certificate for getting LPG refill cylinders were informed that the certificate would be issued after proper verification.
K. Rajaraman, Commissioner of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, told The Hindu that the exercise was to bring the administration to the door step of the public.
The monthly grievance meeting would be held on every second Saturday in all 14 zones in and around the city. The meeting venue would be informed to the public in advance. Cardholders can submit their grievances at the meeting and officials present at the meeting would help them in redressing their grievances.
