TIRUCHI: In anticipation of future requirements that the 27 per cent OBC reservation would warrant, the National Institute of Technology–Tiruchi has planned for a second annexe to its central computing facility.
The new annexe would accommodate 600 additional computer systems, according to Institute Director M. Chidambaram.
The Octagon Computer Centre started as the central facility in 1990 has 300 computer systems in six laboratories and its first annexe that came up in 2006 has two laboratories each with 99 computer systems.
The Computer Support Group (CSG) in charge of the Centre offers mail service, web service, internet service, intranet service, print service, assistance in purchase of computers and its associated components to all departments, staff and students of the Institute. A high speed campus backbone network of 10 gigabits per second was established at a cost of Rs. 1.34 crore and made operational since the start of 2007. The CSG deems the pilot project a major milestone, said convenor S. Selvakumar.
Alongside developing various modules towards automation of administrative services, the CSG has been imparting knowledge in the usage of computers and computer applications for beginners, and advanced level training for school and college students and working professionals at the Centre.
The Centre’s library with a collection of 5,728 text books, 3,239 software CDs, seven journals and 200 project reports subscribes to magazines that include Dataquest, PCquest, Digit, Linux for you, PC world, Information Technology, and Network Computing, said Dr. Selvakumar.
The nearly 1,500 systems in various departments, the main office and the hostels in the entire premises are linked to the 25 servers at the Centre. To address the maintenance needs, the Institute will appoint Computer Systems Trainees shortly. The trainees with the qualification of B.E./ B.Tech. degree in any discipline or MCA/M.Sc.(Computer Science) would receive hands-on training in hardware, trouble shooting, server and computer maintenance, software installation, and networking for a two-year period with stipends of Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 7,000 for the first and second years respectively.
